The Secretary General of PSOE-M, Óscar López, supports the striking public universities in Madrid in Móstoles and accuses the regional government of implementing cuts.
The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function and Secretary General of PSOE-M, Óscar López, showed his support on Wednesday in Móstoles for the public universities in Madrid against the cuts he attributes to the government of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, as reported by Noticias para Municipios.
The event was a day of support for the strike of public universities in Madrid, held at the Cultural Centre Villa de Móstoles. Also speaking were the Secretary of Universities of PSOE-M, Hilda Jiménez, and the Socialist candidate for the Mayor of Móstoles, Juana López Pagán.
López criticised that public universities have to join the general educational strike called in the Community of Madrid this Wednesday and Thursday. According to the organisers, the institutions are experiencing a situation of economic suffocation.
During his speech, the Socialist leader focused on the financial difficulties of several Madrid universities, particularly the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC), which has one of its campuses in Móstoles.
We are seeing the cuts in the public university in Madrid, we are seeing how Complutense or now Rey Juan Carlos have to ask for loans to operate.
The URJC has begun to study the possibility of requesting a loan of around 40 million euros from the Community of Madrid to address its liquidity problems. The proposal was presented by the rector, Abraham Duarte, at the last Governing Council of the university, although the request has not yet been officially submitted.
The university has launched an economic-financial plan with measures to contain spending. This includes halting investments and works, restrictions on new hires, and reviewing the operation of some departments. Unions also report the non-renewal of some teaching and research staff for economic reasons.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, the university plans to reduce heating usage with the aim of saving around 500,000 euros.
López held the regional government responsible for the situation of public universities, expressing it with the metaphor of the chainsaw.
This is what is happening in Madrid, the chainsaw. But you can also get out of the chainsaw.
According to the Socialist leader, these policies worsen the lives of everyone when applied. He also cited the electoral results in the United States and Brazil as examples of rejection of such policies.
