The Las Rozas Plenary unanimously approves the city's Medal of Honour for the national coach, a resident of the municipality. The recognition comes after winning the Euro 2024 and the World Cup 2026.
The Las Rozas City Council has unanimously approved granting the Medal of Honour of the City to the national football coach, Luis de la Fuente, in the ordinary Plenary held this morning. The distinction is awarded according to the municipal regulations governing the granting of honours, as reported by espaciodiario.com.
The mayor, José de la Uz, had already announced the measure during the State of the City Debate on September 4. Until now, the Medal of Honour had only been awarded to Ignacio Echeverría, the 'Hero of the skateboard', who died in the London attack in 2017.
The spokesperson for the Popular Group, Ángel Luis Fernández-Polo, defended the proposal before the Plenary due to the coach's career, which combines sporting achievements with his ties to Las Rozas and a personal and social dimension.
For this combination of professional excellence, connection with Las Rozas, and commitment to the values of solidarity, it is proposed to award the Medal of Honour to Luis de la Fuente
De la Fuente resides in the municipality and has developed much of his professional activity in the City of Football. As coach since December 2022, he has won the UEFA Nations League 2023, the Euro 2024, and the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The popular spokesperson cited his closeness and humility in dealings, his commitment to teamwork, and his participation in social and inclusive initiatives in Las Rozas. He also recalled his visit last summer to the reception point of La Marazuela to support evacuees and volunteers during the fires.
In the same session, the Plenary approved at the request of the Popular Group to dedicate a street in the municipality to the Discalced Mercedarians, for nearly five decades of service and roots in the locality. Their connection with Las Rozas began in 1978 with the creation of the Santa María de la Merced seminary.
The session also served to approve two motions, one from the PP and another from Vox, supporting Ceuta after the invasion on July 31. Both demand an extraordinary response from the central government to protect Spain's sovereignty and territorial integrity; the PP's motion calls for accelerating the procedures for the return or expulsion of those who have entered the country illegally and a plan to ensure the inviolability of the border, while Vox's motion demands reaffirming Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and condemns statements from members of the Moroccan government that question it. Other motions did not receive the necessary support.
Regarding housing, the Plenary has approved applying the Law 2/2026 of urgent measures to increase the supply of publicly protected housing in the Community of Madrid, which will allow greater flexibility in land use and expand the stock of protected flats.
The deputy mayor and councillor for Finance and Festivals, Enrique González, announced that this has been his last Plenary before retiring, after 42 years of professional career, 20 of which were in the City Council. Opposition spokespersons and the mayor have acknowledged his work.
