The Almendro Day Centre in Getafe will have 60 places for elderly care, compared to the 35 that were initially proposed. The mayor, Sara Hernández, announced the new number on Tuesday during the municipal government report, in a presentation alongside the spokespersons of Más Madrid, Ana González Mariscal, and Podemos, Alba Leo, as reported by Noticias para Municipios.
The change responds to the request that the council made to the Community of Madrid at the beginning of the year to increase the places for the assistance service. Hernández explained that they have managed to reach 60 while the procedures continue for the centre to operate as a resource for elderly care.
The project for this new phase was approved on September 17. The municipal government is working with the aim of having the service operational in the first quarter of 2027, although the Community of Madrid must grant the corresponding authorization first.

Until that date arrives, the building, located on Almendro Street, in the San Isidro neighbourhood, is already hosting municipal programmes for active ageing, personal autonomy, and prevention of dependency. This summer, it also served as a climate refuge for the elderly.
The council will allocate 200,000 euros to equip the centre with the necessary materials. The new service will include professionals in physiotherapy, psychology, and gerontological care, in addition to staff for daily operations. Once the authorization is obtained, the municipal government plans to mobilize around one million euros for the launch.
The Almendro model includes resources for families and caregivers, with periods of respite. The project reserved weekends for Family Respite programmes, and the facilities were designed to combine assistance with activities against isolation and in favour of autonomy.
The next step is the authorization from the Community of Madrid. With it, the council expects the daytime care service to be operational in the first quarter of 2027.
