A deployment of 400 agents has evicted the camp at Puerta del Sol in Madrid, with 334 people evicted and two arrests.

The National Police and the Municipal Police of Madrid evicted the camp set up at Puerta del Sol early on Tuesday morning, according to laciutat.cat. The protest began on September 26, following a demonstration for housing.

The Government Delegation in Madrid states that the operation was carried out without disturbances or episodes of violence. The operation concluded with 334 people evicted and two arrests for disobedience and resistance.

The operation involved 220 agents from the National Police and 180 from the Municipal Police of Madrid, as well as firefighters and social services.

The Acampada26s movement claims that the intervention was violent and states that several people were injured due to blows and the use of pepper spray.

The previous Monday, the campers read a manifesto in support of the general strike and to extend the protest to the neighbourhoods. They asserted that they were maintaining the camp, without specifying until when.

The Delegation explains that, from the outset, it applied the regime of the fundamental right to assembly and requested the Superior Police Headquarters of Madrid to ensure its peaceful exercise. It also prioritised dialogue and the voluntary removal of the installations.

On October 26, the Delegation sent a letter stating that the campers had had a reasonable time to present their demands and that it could be legitimate to end the camp. On October 29, it sent a second letter demanding that it be dismantled as soon as possible. According to the agency, the next day the interlocutors dissolved the committees organising the camp, although some people remained.

The Superior Police Headquarters of Madrid communicated to the Delegation alleged criminal acts and incidents inside or around the camp. The Delegation justifies the eviction in a statement:

The evolution of circumstances, the persistence of the installations despite the communications made, the reported disturbances of public order, and the specific danger to people and property determined the need to proceed with the eviction and dismantling as a last resort.
