The former athlete and ex-Podemos candidate for the Madrid mayoralty Roberto Sotomayor has criticised the Formula 1 Grand Prix of the capital with an argument that does not align with the World Championship calendar. According to OK Diario, Sotomayor stated on the programme Todo es Mentira that "there are few Formula 1 street circuits in the world. We are the only one (referring to Madring) along with Valencia."
This statement clashes with the facts: Valencia has not hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix since 2012, 14 years ago. The Valencia circuit held races between 2008 and 2012 and has not returned to the calendar since.
I find it disrespectful that the neighbourhood residents were not taken into account before making the circuit
The current Formula 1 calendar includes six street circuits: Miami, Monaco, Azerbaijan, Singapore, Las Vegas, and Saudi Arabia, although the latter was cancelled in 2026. Madrid would be added, whose layout is considered semi-urban, a different category.
Sotomayor was a Podemos candidate for the Madrid mayoralty in 2023 and did not secure any seats. The first edition of the Grand Prix of Spain in Madrid has already taken place.
