The right-back assures that he did not join for money but to feel like a footballer again after his injury. He had previously negotiated with Qatari Al-Gharafa.
According to goal.com, Dani Carvajal explained on the programme El Larguero the reasons that led him to sign for Getafe CF despite offers from the Middle East. The right-back, who has spent almost his entire career at Real Madrid, spoke with Manu Carreño about his decision.
Carvajal described it as a decision "born out of great passion." He needed to get back to playing after nearly a year sidelined due to the injury he suffered at the Santiago Bernabéu, which he said he has watched the replays of "hundreds of times."
I wanted to feel like a footballer again.
The player added that he has always been in teams that fight to win and that playing for one that is battling for survival motivated him greatly. He stated that money did not drive him and criticized the salary cap in La Liga, which he considers "absurd" because it is difficult to hide payments in kind.
Before making his decision, Carvajal had practically finalised an offer from Al-Gharafa and had even organised his move to Doha. He explained that in the end, he weighed the pros and cons and had doubts about the Spanish transfer market. He also linked his decision to the war he experienced up close through his brother-in-law, Joselu, in Qatar.
When it affects you personally, it becomes a bit terrifying.
Regarding his relationship with Álvaro Arbeloa, Carvajal referred questions to the Real Madrid coach and acknowledged that his lack of minutes after the injury forced him to spend several months not being a starter, with the World Cup and his contract renewal at stake. He maintained that he always respected technical decisions and trained every day with the aim of helping the team.
