The information, reported by Infobae, notes that the Alicante coach, who was then 52 years old, had managed for 24 seasons in lower categories before debuting in the top flight. His first match was a goalless draw in Tenerife, and a week later he won 2-0 against UCAM Murcia.
In his first full season, Getafe was promoted to the top division after eliminating Huesca and Tenerife in the playoffs. In the 2017-18 season, now in the top category, the team finished eighth. A year later, they reached their league peak: fifth with 59 points, just two away from the Champions League, and only Atlético de Madrid conceded fewer goals.
