Madrid City Council is calling on the Government Delegation and the Ministry of the Interior to explain the withdrawal of the National Police when the encampments began in Puerta del Sol, where hundreds of people have been camping since Saturday night.

The City Council has expressed its surprise and indignation at the continuation of the protest and directly blames the Government Delegation in Madrid. In a statement, it argues that the encampment is a consequence of a supposed neglect of duties and a lack of diligence on the part of the Delegation and the Ministry of the Interior.
The protest began after the march on Saturday against the eviction of Maricarmen and to demand urgent measures regarding housing. After the demonstration, some participants returned to Puerta del Sol and began setting up tents, leading to the encampment that continues this Sunday.

The government of José Luis Martínez-Almeida also questions the actions of the Security Forces during the protest. According to the City Council, when the encampments began, the National Police withdrew from their positions, prompting a demand for the Government Delegation and the Ministry of the Interior to clarify whether that withdrawal was a direct order from the delegate.
The City Council has classified the encampment as illegal and believes that what has occurred is a consequence of a lack of diligence on the part of the Government Delegation and the Ministry of the Interior. The City Council even suggests clarifying whether the presence of the protesters in Sol was the result of a deliberate decision.
In its statement, the City Council recalls the precedent of the 15M mobilisations of 2011, when Puerta del Sol also became the epicentre of an encampment. According to the City Council, on that occasion, the evictions were organised and coordinated by the Government Delegation. Therefore, the municipal government is now demanding an explanation regarding the actions of the Delegation and the withdrawal of National Police officers when the encampments began.
The protest remains linked to the demands of the housing movement, whose participants are calling on the government of Pedro Sánchez for measures to address housing access issues and, in particular, the approval of the so-called 'Maricarmen decree'.
