Kimi Antonelli won the Spanish Grand Prix of Formula 1 this Sunday, the first race held in Madrid in 45 years, according to tudn.com. The Mercedes driver secured his eighth victory of the 2026 season at the new Madring circuit, located in the IFEMA and Valdebebas area, next to Barajas Airport and the Real Madrid sports city.
The podium was completed by Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Lando Norris (McLaren), in that order. It is the first podium in the history of the Madrid track, which has a contract to host F1 until 2035.
The race was decided on lap 33 when the Mexican Checo Pérez (Cadillac) retired due to a breakdown in the engine, specifically in the water system. Pérez, who started from position 18, slammed the steering wheel before getting out of the car.
With this victory, Antonelli leads the championship with 267 points, ahead of his teammate at Mercedes, George Russell (201), and Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari, 191). The Italian, who turned 20 in August, has won in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco, Belgium, Italy, and Spain, and aims to become the youngest champion in history, a record currently held by Sebastian Vettel since 2010 at 23 years, four months, and 11 days.
