The Tenants' Union of Madrid denounces the removal of the altar that neighbours erected in front of Maricarmen's house in Retiro. The organisation asserts that it will not allow her memory to be destroyed.
According to The Objective, the Tenants' Union of Madrid has reported the removal of the altar that neighbours placed in front of Maricarmen's house, a woman of 87 years who was evicted on September 23 in the district of Retiro. The organisation warns that it will not allow her memory to be erased.
Those of us who have accompanied Maricarmen for the last seven years will not allow her memory to be destroyed in this way. They can try to destroy an altar and some candles, but they know they are incapable of erasing everything that Maricarmen has sown.
In a message posted on social media, the union champions Maricarmen's legacy and rejects the disappearance of the items placed in her memory.
Maricarmen lived at 46 Alcalde Sainz de Baranda Street, where she had resided since 1956 with an old rent contract signed by her father. The eviction was carried out on the fourth attempt, following a long legal battle over the flat.
The case became one of the triggers for mobilisations for housing rights in Madrid and led to a camp at Puerta del Sol, where activists and citizens demanded greater protection for tenants against evictions.
