The Deprecam programme detected 1,928 suspicions of malignancy in 2025, representing 1.68% of the women studied. Health is considering extending screening from 45 to 74 years.
On the eve of World Breast Cancer Day, the Health Minister, Fátima Matute, reviewed the Early Detection of Breast Cancer programme of the Community of Madrid, known as Deprecam. According to ABC, Matute provided the data during her visit to the Breast Unit of the 12 de Octubre University Hospital.
In 2025, the screening identified 1,928 cases with suspected malignancy, which is 1.68% of the women studied. Asymptomatic women aged between 50 and 69 can have screening mammograms every two years, and the Health Department is working to extend the programme to a range of 45 to 74 years.
The Breast Unit at 12 de Octubre has four mammography machines with 2D and 3D imaging, including contrast mammography, as well as four state-of-the-art ultrasound machines, a 3D automated ultrasound machine, prone and automated biopsy systems, and MRI with dedicated antennas and sequences. The tests are overseen by eight professionals.
Appointments are managed from an invitation sent by the oncology coordination services. Up to 30% of users already schedule their appointments independently, through the Virtual Health Card app, the website, or by phone at 900 102 112.
The regional government has reviewed and strengthened the content on the programme's guarantees on the website to encourage more women to participate. According to the government itself, the results depend on primary care professionals, who remind patients about the test from health centres, and on the technicians and doctors who perform and report on them in Madrid's public hospitals.
