Madrid Metro will interrupt the section between Cuatro Caminos and Lucero on Saturday and Sunday for driverless train tests. It will affect eight stations, which will have a free surface bus service.

According to Madrid Actual, Metro Line 6 will again close this weekend the section between Cuatro Caminos and Lucero. The interruption will affect Saturday and Sunday, and the stations of Cuatro Caminos and Lucero will remain open as line terminals, just like the previous weekend.

The closure affects eight stations: Guzmán el Bueno, Vicente Aleixandre, Ciudad Universitaria, Moncloa, Argüelles, Príncipe Pío, Puerta del Ángel and Alto de Extremadura. During the interruption, Madrid Metro will provide a special and free bus service that will cover the affected route above ground.

The safety tests aim to complete the automation of the Circular Line. Two of the new driverless trains will run through this section at low and high speeds to check their performance and integration with the other elements of the automatic service.

The closures will be repeated over several weekends until the end of the year, in continuous periods of 48 hours. Metro will notify in advance of the next sections where circulation must be suspended.

The eight affected stations already have platform doors, the testing and adjustments of which are expected to be completed by the end of this month. Another 11 stations on the Circular also have them, and nine are pending installation, a process that will conclude before the end of the year. According to the company, the maximum distance between the platform and the train will be three centimetres.

With complete automation, Line 6 will increase from 400,000 daily passengers to 730,000.
