Francisco Javier Arias Madrid, a member of GREIM, participated in the rescue of a 33-year-old woman who suffered internal bleeding from an ectopic pregnancy. The intervention took place on September 13th on the Borosa River route.
A 33-year-old woman, Inma, was rescued on September 13th on the Borosa River route in the Sierra de Cazorla (Jaén), after fainting and losing consciousness while hiking with her boyfriend, Juanjo, 39. The couple had started their hike around 11:00 AM and, two hours later, the young woman began to feel unwell.
The rescue was carried out by the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) of the Civil Guard, based in Granada, and the Air Unit. Among the crew members was Francisco Javier Arias Madrid, a Navarre civil guard who spent 20 years stationed in Ceuta and is currently part of GREIM. The information was published by the digital newspaper El Faro de Ceuta.
According to Juanjo, the young woman fainted several times and they could not move her. "I thought it was just a simple stomach cramp. Neither of us knew she was pregnant or what was happening," he explained. The couple was in an area without coverage, so another couple who was with them raised the alarm. Juanjo tried to communicate via satellite and sent distress messages.
A Civil Guard helicopter was dispatched to the location. The crew consisted of Brigadier David Fernández, First Corporal Juan José Pareja, Civil Guard Víctor Sánchez, and Francisco Javier Arias Madrid. The helicopter had initially been mobilised for another service, but the couple's coordinates appeared during the intervention.

That was the phrase Juanjo heard when the agents arrived. "At that point, I knew the seriousness of the situation," he recounted. The young woman was first taken to Cazorla, where they managed to stabilise her, and then to the San Juan de la Cruz Hospital in Úbeda, where she underwent emergency surgery. The doctors discovered she was suffering from internal bleeding due to an ectopic pregnancy, something neither of them knew.
Inma needed five bags of blood and spent one night in ICU. On Monday, she was moved to a ward and on September 17th, she was discharged from the hospital, able to return with Juanjo to Málaga, where they both reside. The couple is now preparing a letter of thanks to the rescue team.
