The Alcorcón City Council has secured that the Community of Madrid must carry out the renovation works of the athletics tracks at the Santo Domingo sports complex before 31 December 2026, following a ruling from the TSJM.
The Alcorcón City Council has managed to unlock the renovation of the athletics tracks at the Santo Domingo sports complex after ten years of waiting. The ruling from the High Court of Justice of Madrid obliges the Community of Madrid to execute the works before 31 December 2026, as announced by the mayor, Candelaria Testa, as reported by Noticias para Municipios.
The project was included in the Regional Investment Programme (PIR) 2016-2019 during the PP's mandate, which prevented the City Council from directly undertaking the execution once it was incorporated into the regional programme. Due to the lack of works, the City Council filed a 2022 appeal for inactivity and breach of commitments against the regional administration.
After many calls, demands, and even a judicial appeal against the regional administration, we have managed to get the Community of Madrid to carry out the improvement works on the athletics track at the Santo Domingo sports complex that have been stalled for ten years," Testa pointed out.
The improvement affects nearly 3,000 athletes who use the facility, according to municipal data. The Councillor for Youth, Diversity, Technological Innovation, and Sport, Carmen Martín, has emphasised the situation of the Alcorcón Athletics Club, whose activities and participation in competitions have been affected by the deterioration of the track.
If this improvement was necessary ten years ago, today it is essential," Martín stated.
The City Council has noted that the renovation of the tracks is not the only pending action from the previous regional programme. Investments in the Parque de la Paz, the Santo Domingo swimming pool, and Industrias street in the Urtinsa industrial estate also remain unexecuted. The total of these pending works amounts to around 4 million euros, as explained by the mayor.
We have been demanding both the renovation of the athletics track, which was very deteriorated in 2016, and other works included in this programme that the Community of Madrid must undertake for ten years," Testa recalled.
The mayor contrasted this situation with the management of the PIR 2022-2026, which the current municipal government has decided to undertake directly. As examples of advanced actions, she cited the renovation of the City Council's administrative building, the comprehensive renovation project of the Urtinsa industrial estate, and the planned intervention in the Orense square.
With the deadline set by the ruling, the works on the Santo Domingo tracks must be completed before the end of 2026.
