The exhibition 'Ana Locking. Nostalgia / Utopia' is entering its final weeks at the Canal de Isabel II in Madrid, where it will remain until 27 September. The show, as reported by Europa Press, showcases more than 160 garments and reviews nearly two decades of the designer's career.
Curated by Alberto Gonper, the retrospective is structured around two concepts, nostalgia and utopia, and avoids chronological order to establish connections between different stages and references of Locking's work. Admission is free.
The journey begins on the ground floor, where five dioramas recreate scenes inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, the plant world, the lunar landscape, and the American dream. In this same space, a cubic structure has been installed that serves as a projection room and hosts an audiovisual work created for the occasion.
The first floor features collections linked to nostalgia; the second showcases more utopian and activist proposals; and the third is dedicated to the creative process, from the initial ideas to the realization of the collections. In this last section, photographs, videos of fashion shows, and works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Juergen Teller are displayed.
In July, when the regional government announced the extension of the exhibition, it had already welcomed over 48,000 visitors since its opening.
The activities are free and include accessibility measures: reserved spaces for people with disabilities, loan of technical aids, adapted materials, and visits in Spanish Sign Language.
Born in Toledo in 1970, Ana Locking has developed a career linked to the renewal of Spanish fashion and has collaborated with national and international cultural institutions. Among her accolades are the National Fashion Award 2020, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts 2021, the Culture Award of the Community of Madrid 2022, and her appointment as Favourite Daughter of Castilla-La Mancha in 2023.
The exhibition can be visited at the Canal de Isabel II (calle Santa Engracia, 125) until 27 September. Admission is free and the scheduled activities are complimentary.
