Residents of the Community of Madrid generated 17.8% of the 46.9 million trips made in Spain between April and June, the highest percentage by region. The average daily spending in the region was €116, the second highest.
Residents of the Community of Madrid topped tourist departures in the second quarter of 2026, generating 17.8% of the total 46.9 million trips recorded in Spain, according to the Resident Tourism Survey published this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), disseminated by latribunadeciudadreal.es. This figure surpasses that of Catalonia (17.4%) and Andalusia (15.0%), the next regions with the highest volume of travellers.
In terms of propensity to travel, Madrileños made 1,136 trips per 1,000 inhabitants, only behind the Basque Country (1,223) and Aragon (1,188).
The average daily spending for trips to the Community of Madrid reached €116, the second highest figure in the country after the Balearic Islands (€117) and ahead of the Canary Islands (€115). Nationally, the average daily expenditure was €97, an increase of 5.4% compared to the same period in 2025.
Trips by residents of Spain between April and June grew by 1.1% year-on-year, and the total associated spending rose by 3.5%, reaching €15,729.5 million. Domestic trips increased by 1% (41.6 million), while trips abroad rose by 2% (5.29 million).
By purpose, leisure, recreation, and holiday trips fell by 1.1% (24.9 million, 53.2% of the total), while business and other professional trips surged by 11.1%, reaching 4.5 million. Visits to family or friends increased by 1.8% (14.6 million).
The average duration of trips decreased by 2.9%, to 3.5 overnight stays. April saw the highest activity of the quarter, with 16.1 million trips and an average of 3.9 nights.
Regarding accommodation, the INE recorded a 2.7% decrease in stays at family or friends' homes during domestic trips and a 2.0% drop in hotel overnight stays for trips abroad.
Andalusia was the main destination for Spanish residents, accounting for 16.8% of trips (7.88 million), followed by Catalonia (13.6% and 6.38 million) and the Valencian Community (11.0% and 5.15 million). Spending on domestic trips increased by 5.5%, reaching €10,547.2 million, with accommodation as the main expense (27.3% of the total).
Between April and June, the population aged 15 and over made 41.4 million excursions without overnight stays, a 7.3% decrease compared to 2025. 96.7% of these outings were for personal reasons.
