Actor Javier Gutiérrez claims that half of the flats in his property in Madrid are now holiday apartments and warns that in a few years there may be "four or five owners" left.
The actor Javier Gutiérrez, a two-time Goya Award winner, has stated that half of the flats in his property in Madrid are functioning as holiday apartments. He shares this in an interview with Esquire magazine published in early 2026, as reported by que.es, taking advantage of the premiere of the film 'Rondallas', directed by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo.
"I live in a property in Madrid where half of the flats are already holiday apartments. In a few years, there may be only four or five owners left," the actor asserts in that conversation.
Gutiérrez moved to Madrid at 18 from Galicia and maintains that the city, which always felt welcoming to him, is now becoming hostile. In the interview, he expresses nostalgia for belonging to a place and a community, the same theme addressed in the film he was presenting.
It is a true tragedy for a way of life that we enjoyed a few years ago and that today is unthinkable to sustain
The actor extends the phenomenon of gentrification to other cities like Málaga, Valencia, or Bilbao, although he considers the situation in Madrid to be unsustainable. His testimony comes after the death of Maricarmen Abascal, the 87-year-old neighbour evicted from her home, which led to protests in Puerta del Sol and brought two housing decrees to the political forefront.
Gutiérrez also recalls summers at the family house in the mountains, where he still knows the neighbours and everyone calls him by his name. He mentions that he looks forward to Christmas or summer to retreat there with his family.
