Professor Ana Belén Muñoz Ruiz from Carlos III University of Madrid details on RNE the rights of workers ahead of the general strike on 9 November and the rise of social unionism for housing.
The tenured professor of Labour Law and Social Security at Carlos III University of Madrid, Ana Belén Muñoz Ruiz, explained in a radio interview the rights of workers regarding the upcoming general strike on 9 November. The lecturer reminded that employees are not obliged to individually inform their company that they will join the strike, as the notice corresponds to the unions so that companies can organise themselves, as reported by rtve.es.
Regarding minimum services, Muñoz Ruiz specified that they are mandatory in essential services, such as transport, communications, or healthcare, unless there are very justified reasons not to set them. The professor emphasised that the general strike called for 9 November affects all sectors and that workers who decide to join it do not have to provide explanations to their employer.
A phenomenon of social unionism has begun where associations use the term union to highlight this situation of need,” said Muñoz Ruiz.
The lecturer framed this phenomenon in a context of transformation of unionism, in which traditional unions have also created specific units dedicated to housing. Muñoz Ruiz believes that housing is related to labour rights and recalls that there are historical precedents of mobilisations for rent issues.
“Housing is ultimately very directly related to wages, to the need to have a place, to be able to live,” explained the professor, who pointed out that insufficient wages to cover housing costs directly link both issues. The call for a strike for housing, driven by a union different from the traditional ones, responds in her opinion to this transformation of unionism.
