The Councillor for Education, Science and Universities of the Community of Madrid, Rocío Zarzalejo, has warned that the general strike called by the unions for November 10 could be illegal if it is not justified within the labour framework.
The Councillor for Education, Science and Universities of the Community of Madrid, Rocío Zarzalejo, has questioned the legality of the general strike that the unions plan to call for November 10. In an interview with Servimedia, as reported by clmpress.com, Zarzalejo pointed out that this pressure tool must be linked to a collective labour conflict and not to housing demands.
The councillor explained that the general strike "is a tool that workers' representatives have to exert pressure on a collective labour conflict". In this sense, she emphasised that "there must be a representation of workers claiming something against an employer", because "claiming housing issues is not going against an employer".
Everything suggests that this strike, unless they justify it properly and within the legal framework, will not be a legal strike
Zarzalejo also criticised the unions for deciding to call a national strike now, when they have not done so in the eight years of Pedro Sánchez's government, and questioned what they will be claiming: "housing, salaries, education". In her view, the call comes "when Parliament is already dissolved and heading towards elections" and responds to "demands that are not within the paradigm for the reasons a strike can be called".
The councillor has framed these mobilisations in a broader political context. She stated that, "regardless of the first electoral date of November 29, things will continue", because "the goal is Madrid". According to Zarzalejo, "they have been pointing to this for months and these are demands that are only made in Madrid", as "the centre of the target is President Ayuso".
Looking ahead to the municipal and regional elections in May 2027, the councillor estimated that protests will continue until then: "the intention is to make the Government of the Community of Madrid lose regardless of what happens on November 29". Furthermore, she warned that if the Popular Party were to win, "the streets of Madrid will be set ablaze with even more fervour and rage".
