The City Council of Madrid activates a special mobility plan for the military parade on National Day, with 80,000 attendees expected. The road and pedestrian closures affect Chamberí, Salamanca, Centro, Retiro, and Arganzuela.
The military parade on National Day this Monday, 12th October, will mobilise around 80,000 people in Madrid, according to attendance forecasts. The City Council of Madrid has designed a special mobility plan with Municipal Police and Mobility Agents to reduce the impact of pedestrian and traffic closures, as reported by the newspaper El Mundo.
The military parade begins at 11:00 and will pass through the roundabout of Emperor Charles V, the Paseo del Prado, Cibeles Square, Paseo de Recoletos, and Colón Square. The roads from which the parade can be followed will remain closed to vehicular traffic from 07:00 to 15:00, approximately, although universal accessibility is guaranteed.
The affected districts are Chamberí, Salamanca, Centro, Retiro, and Arganzuela. The City Council plans to maintain motor traffic at key points: access to Atocha station via Méndez Álvaro, the roundabout at the monument to the victims of 11-M to access Atocha, Alfonso XII and Avenida Ciudad de Barcelona, the transversal passage from General Martínez Campos to Serrano, and the side of Paseo de la Castellana, keeping the roundabouts and that of Doctor Marañón clear, and the tunnel from Ciudad de Barcelona to Ronda de Atocha and vice versa.
The closures may be extended depending on the needs detected during the day. Additionally, between 07:00 and 15:00, there will be route changes for EMT buses circulating between the roundabout of Emperor Charles V and Colón Square, affecting 48 lines of the daytime network. The bicimad bike service will be out of service at the 11 stations located near the route, a preventive measure to ensure safety.
The Community of Madrid has increased the Metro network by 70%. The special operation begins at 09:00, two hours before the Armed Forces parade, and focuses on lines 1, 2, 4, 5, and 10 until the end of the event. Line 2 sees the largest increase, with 56% more trains, followed by line 4, with 50%, and line 1, with 40%. The Central Control Post of the subway continuously monitors attendance to adjust the service to demand.
In the afternoon, reinforcements continue. From 19:00, lines 3 and 10 will increase their capacity to facilitate access to the concert by Carlos Baute, which starts at 20:00 in Plaza de España. Line 2 will also increase its frequency ahead of the music and fireworks show scheduled for 21:30 in Cibeles.
