Chinchón is less than an hour from Madrid and its historic centre has been protected since 1974. The Plaza Mayor, with its porticoes and wooden balconies, is the main attraction of the municipality.

According to noticiasdelvino.com, Chinchón, in the Community of Madrid, is located less than an hour from the capital. Its urban area has been protected as a historical-artistic ensemble since 1974, according to the Decree published in the BOE that declared it.

The municipality, in the southeastern region and within the Las Vegas comarca, has around six thousand inhabitants according to official figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Its layout as a historic town can be explored on foot in just a few minutes.

The Plaza Mayor is the starting point of the visit. It has an irregular shape, is enclosed, and features porticoes and wooden balconies. The earliest constructions date back to the 15th century, and the complete enclosure was achieved in the 17th century.

Local literature estimates that there are 234 balconies surrounding the square. This space has hosted proclamations, shows, bullfights, and film shoots, and continues to be the centre of social life in the village.

Next to it is the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, which combines various styles and houses a painting by Goya dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. Very close by is the Clock Tower, which is all that remains of an old church that has disappeared. Hence the local saying about the tower without a church and the church without a tower.

The tour of both buildings is short, so it can be combined with a visit to the square in the same morning or afternoon.
