The municipal markets of the capital have scheduled tastings of Hispanic-American cuisine, mariachis, dance, and family theatre from October 5 to 12. The City Council has allocated over 13 million for their modernisation this year.

The municipal markets of Madrid have organised a gastronomic, cultural, and leisure programme to celebrate the Day of Hispanicity, which will run from October 5 to 12 across various districts of the capital. The initiative was presented this Saturday at the Barceló market, as reported by madridactual.es, with the presence of the delegate for Economy, Innovation, and Finance, Engracia Hidalgo.

The offerings include tastings of Hispanic-American fusion cuisine, folk performances, family theatre shows, and live music. Accompanying Hidalgo at the presentation were the councillor for the Centre, Carlos Segura; the manager of the Barceló market, Carlos Carrasco; and the president of the Confederation of Commerce of Madrid (COCAM), Marta González.

The Barceló market itself will host a showcooking by chef Carlos Sierra, featuring fusion specialities such as "The Madrid Roll", mini Cuban with Iberian pork, steak tartare with fried egg, chistorra hotdog with mint and tomato jam, mini American cookie, and apple pie with vanilla chantilly.

The La Cebada market will add mariachi performances, folklore, and tastings of traditional products on October 8, 9, and 10. The Antón Martín market will open its agenda on October 5 and maintain it until the 10th with Latino DJ sessions, dance exhibitions, a map of Hispanicity, and themed decorations.

Family proposals will arrive at the San Isidro market on October 10, from 11:00 to 14:00, with the theatrical performance "The Reporters of the New World". The gastronomic offerings will be complemented with tastings of Spanish products at Las Águilas on October 9 at 11:00, of tortilla de patatas at Villaverde Alto on October 10 from 11:30 to 13:30, and a Hispanic-American culinary showcase at Las Ventas on October 9.

The La Paz market has planned an event in the afternoon of October 6 alongside the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), and on the 9th a tasting of Argentine, Venezuelan products, and Chilean wines. The spaces of Villa de Vallecas, Los Mostenses, and Alto de Extremadura will also participate with culinary days and themed atmospheres.

For the Day of Hispanicity, the network managed alongside COCAM will deploy a joint promotional action at the Temple of Debod and the Pedro Zerolo square, aiming to showcase the variety of local commerce and strengthen public-private collaboration.

As part of the Comprehensive Strategy for Strengthening Commercial and Hospitality Activity 2025-2027, the City Council has already mobilised 54 of the 95 million euros planned. A specific line for municipal markets has allocated over 13 million euros this year for their promotion and modernisation.

What I am most proud of as a member of the Municipal Corporation in recent years is that we have been able to adapt the markets to the new social reality. It is not just about the traditional model, where the stalls were only for shopping. No, now people come to eat, to be, to meet," Hidalgo stated.

The programme kicks off on October 5 at Antón Martín and extends until October 12, when the promotional action moves to the Temple of Debod and the Pedro Zerolo square.
