A report from the Fire Department of the City of Madrid concludes that the tents set up in Puerta del Sol do not impede the passage of emergency vehicles and that the hydrants on Carmen and Arenal streets are accessible.
The Fire Department of the City of Madrid reviewed the conditions of the camping for housing set up in Puerta del Sol on Wednesday and concluded that "it does not pose a significant impact on the access conditions for Fire Service vehicles," according to the report accessed by elDiario.es and reported by elplural.com.
The inspection confirmed that the accesses to the square from Alcalá, Montera, Carmen, Preciados, Arenal, Mayor, and Carretas streets remain free of tents and other elements that could hinder the passage of emergency vehicles.
The document also notes that the column serving the Renfe facilities in Puerta del Sol is clear and accessible, as are the hydrants located on Carmen and Arenal streets.
The firefighters add that the tents set up in the square are not anchored to the ground, so in case of an emergency, "they could be moved or removed quickly." The review was limited to access conditions and the operability of emergency services, without addressing public order issues.
The report comes after the Government of Isabel Díaz Ayuso ordered the Government Delegation to clear the camping and announced on Thursday the filing of a contentious-administrative appeal after the 48-hour deadline given to dismantle it expired.
The City of Madrid maintains its demand to clear the square. On Thursday, the delegate for Security and Emergencies, Inma Sanz, sent a letter to the Government Delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín Aguirre, with photographs that, according to the city council, show "a large knife" and cobblestones found in the tents, as well as graffiti at the base of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree with the inscription 'Ayuso be careful'.
In the letter, Sanz describes the camping as an "illegal concentration that still remains due to the inaction of this Government Delegation" and argues that the presence of "sharp objects, knives, cobblestones, and other items that can be used as weapons" poses "a clear threat to public safety," which is the responsibility of the Government Delegation. She also refers to "serious vandalism against various historical and heritage assets" and graffiti "in a threatening tone towards political leaders in this region."
The municipal letter adds to the request sent on Wednesday for the dismantling of the camping. The protest, which demands solutions to the housing crisis, keeps the tents in Puerta del Sol awaiting the response of the Government Delegation to the municipal and regional request.
