A 68-year-old street vendor reports the theft of his day's earnings, around 1,700 euros, while saying goodbye to his employees at the Alcobendas market.
A moment's distraction cost Alberto Chamorro, a 68-year-old fruit vendor, the earnings from an entire day's work. On August 31, after he had already dismantled his stall at the Alcobendas market, an unknown individual approached his truck and, after engaging in a brief conversation, stole a bum bag he had left in the cabin. Inside it was about 1,700 euros in cash, as well as personal documents, health cards, the Mercamadrid ID, spare keys, and bank cards, according to the report filed with the National Police that ABC has accessed.
The events took place near the sports centre where the market is held. Chamorro, who has been selling fruit at markets in the Community of Madrid for half a century and was a representative of street vendors at Mercamadrid, explained that the individual, described as a medium-height man with a shaved head, asked him if he was going to leave the vehicle there and then left. It was when he got back into the truck that he noticed the bum bag, which he usually keeps attached to his body, was missing.
The Alcobendas market is very safe; nothing like this has ever happened," Chamorro recounted this Sunday while attending his stall at the market in the Hortaleza neighbourhood.
On the same night of the incident, the mayor of Alcobendas, Rocío García, a customer of his stall, contacted him to find out what had happened and to express her support. The complainant hopes that the security cameras at the sports centre, the only ones focusing on the market area, captured the moment of the theft. The investigation is now trying to locate the perpetrator.
Chamorro is using the report to call for more security at the markets. Although he acknowledges that "the police do their job very well, often passing by here," he believes that the installation of deterrent surveillance cameras could prevent further thefts.
