The City Council of Madrid organises a display with nearly 200 pieces from Austria, the Vatican, France, Italy, and 39 Spanish lenders about the art and architecture of the capital in the 17th century.

According to La Razón, the City Council of Madrid has organised the exhibition “Theatre of Grandeur. Art, Architecture and City in Baroque Madrid”, dedicated to how the capital was experienced and described during the Golden Age.

The exhibition brings together nearly 200 pieces from Austria, the Vatican, France, Italy, and 39 Spanish lenders. Among them is an anonymous painting of the Paseo del Prado and the San Jerónimo race, which arrives for the first time from the Hochosterwitz castle in Austria.

Among the works are two portraits of the imperial ambassador Hans Khevenhüller and the Baptism of Prince Fernando, which is exhibited for the first time in Spain. Additionally, sketches and designs of facades, buildings, and palaces from the 17th century are included, along with some 3D pieces from the same period.

The catalogue has 591 pages, with contributions from over 30 authors who have written about Madrid in the 17th century and other Baroque capitals such as Rome, Vienna, Lisbon, Mexico City, Palermo, or Naples. The explanations of the pieces occupy 170 pages.

The coordinators of the exhibition define the Baroque as follows:

It was a dramatic and theatrical culture based on the ability to move through grandeur and an artistic language characterised by complexity and intensity…

For the residents of the capital, the exhibition traverses the city that extended from the Rastro to San Bernardino and from the Paseo del Prado to the banks of the Manzanares, with its popular and courtly neighbourhoods.
