Durán Arte y Subastas will sell the oil painting "The Couple," signed by Rafael Zabaleta in 1931, with a starting price of 30,000 euros on Tuesday, October 27.
According to information published by elmira.es, the oil painting "The Couple" (1931), by the painter Rafael Zabaleta, from Quesada (Jaén), will be auctioned on Tuesday October 27 in Madrid with a starting price of 30,000 euros. It is a canvas measuring 52 by 66 centimetres, signed by the artist in the lower right corner, presented framed and coming from a private collection.
The auction house explains that this is the first work Zabaleta presented in an exhibition after completing his studies at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in 1931. Since then, the painting has been part of six other exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona, and retains on its reverse the labels of three galleries from both cities.
The work is part of lot 259 in the first session of the October auction of Durán Arte y Subastas, dedicated to prints and painting. The bidding will start at 17:00 hours in the hall at Calle Goya, 19, Madrid. The sessions on October 28 and 29 will be dedicated to books, manuscripts, decorative arts, and jewellery.
The painting depicts two figures inside a café, with simplified forms. The auction house relates it to the isolated characters of Edgar Degas and the stylisation of Amedeo Modigliani. It was first exhibited in 1932 at the San Fernando Students' Exhibition, and the critic Manuel Abril reviewed the exhibition in the magazine Blanco y Negro.
Since 1932, the painting has been part of exhibitions such as the one at the Biosca Gallery in Madrid (1975) and the tribute by Caja de Madrid (1986). The work is also listed in the cataloguing study by researcher María Guzmán Pérez, published in Jaén in 2010.
