The IQM Spark computer will be installed at the Polytechnic University of Madrid before the end of 2026. Universities, hospitals, research centres, and startups will be able to use it.
Telefónica and IQM Quantum Computers will deploy the first quantum computer in the Community of Madrid at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), as reported by the company in information gathered by pressdigital.es. The system, an IQM Spark, will be installed before the end of 2026.
The system is designed for research, education, and early-stage development. According to the two companies, universities, hospitals, research centres, and startups will have direct access to real quantum hardware to develop and test algorithms, as well as acquire the necessary knowledge to explore future use cases.
The region already has two other quantum computers from Telefónica and IQM, installed at the Galicia Supercomputing Centre (CESGA). With the new system, the Community of Madrid will be able to develop quantum competencies locally and with practical experience.
The president of Telefónica Spain and general director of B2B, Borja Ochoa, has placed the project within the company's collaboration with the Community in quantum technologies, which includes networks and data encryption in sensitive sectors such as Health and Security:
this project represents a further step in the close collaboration that the company maintains with the Community of Madrid in the deployment of quantum technologies
For his part, the CEO and co-founder of IQM Quantum Computers, Jan Goetz, noted that the investment will allow researchers, students, and industries to develop their capabilities in the long term:
by investing in its own quantum computer, the Community of Madrid is creating an infrastructure that will enable its researchers, students, and industries to develop their capabilities in the long term
For the residents of Madrid, the practical change is that companies, startups, and research centres in the region will be able to test quantum applications without travelling to Galicia, as the equipment will remain in the capital.
