The eleventh edition of FIRST Global Challenge, the World Robotics Olympics for Educational Robotics and Young Talent, will take place in Madrid, as reported by gironanoticies.com. The event will gather more than 2,000 young people from over 190 countries.
The organization expects to receive up to 50,000 visitors during the four days of competition. The project was presented at the Museum of San Isidro with the participation of Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST Global and holder of over 1,000 patents, including that of the Segway.
It’s not just about young people building robots, but about robots helping to build young people
This is how Kamen summarised the philosophy of the initiative, which aims to develop technical skills, leadership, and teamwork.
In the competition, participants design and program robots to tackle challenges related to global issues. Since 2017, FIRST Global has engaged young people from 199 countries and has impacted over 3.5 million students, according to the organization’s own data.
According to FIRST Global, 41% of its participants are women, and 92% of the teams have female representation.
In Madrid, the organization aims to extend activities to schools, universities, businesses, and families. The project is driven by FIRST Global Spain, a private non-profit initiative promoted by entrepreneurs such as Gonzalo Ortiz from Start You Up, and Álvaro Castán from TBC Agency. It has the institutional support of the City Council and the Community of Madrid.
