Spanish cyclist Juan Ayuso (Lidl Trek) fell to the ground just metres from the finish line at the Grand Prix of Québec after colliding with a rival in the sprint. He managed to get up and crossed the line on foot with the bike to one side.
The Spanish cyclist Juan Ayuso, from the Lidl Trek team, suffered a hard fall just metres from the finish line of the fifteenth edition of the Grand Prix of Québec, a UCI World Tour event held this Friday over a 206-kilometre circuit in the Canadian city, according to sport.es.
Ayuso was fighting to finish in the top ten when he touched a rival and ended up crashing hard onto the asphalt with the finish line just a step away. In pain, he managed to get up and crossed the line on foot, with the bike to one side.
The Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) took the victory by surpassing the Italian Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) in a two-man sprint, after both had escaped to the finish of the race. For the 26-year-old Belgian rider, this is his 78th professional victory, the eleventh of this year and the first since he won the Clásica de San Sebastián 41 days ago.
Completing the podium, 15 seconds behind, was the Danish Anthon Charming (Uno-X Mobility). Following them were the British Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5), fourth at 28 seconds, and the American Quinn Simmons (Lidl Trek), fifth at 30 seconds.
After several attempts to break away at the start, the race picked up pace with 42 kilometres to go when Frenchman Paul Seixas attacked unsuccessfully. Ten kilometres later, Evenepoel moved to the front alongside Italians Ciccone, Alberto Bettiol, and Alessandro Pinarello, with Charmig on his wheel.
The climb to Montagne caused a new selection, and the Belgian was left alone with Ciccone and Charmig. Evenepoel, world champion in Glasgow in 2022, took advantage of the last climb to shake off Charmig and reach Ciccone, whom he surpassed in the sprint. This victory follows that of Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe just days before the World Championships in Montreal.
