Villalba University Hospital leads the Best in Class 2026 ranking in its complexity group, among 22 national centres. The public Madrid facility has accumulated seven awards for its services and the BiC for best medium complexity hospital in the last five years.
The Villalba University Hospital is the best medium complexity hospital in Spain according to the Best in Class 2026 Hospital Ranking, as published by noroestemadrid.com. The public centre, part of the Community of Madrid network, tops the first edition of this classification within its complexity group, competing against 22 national hospitals.
The ranking is compiled by Gaceta Médica and the Chair of Innovation and Health Management at Rey Juan Carlos University. It is an evolution of the Best in Class (BiC) Awards, which have been evaluating hospital excellence for over two decades through the Patient Care Quality Index (ICAP), an indicator that measures the organisation, processes, and best practices of hospital services.
The new classification maintains this index as its core but incorporates other factors: the results obtained, their consistency, the excellence of services, the BiC 5-Star recognitions, and innovation in artificial intelligence. To achieve this, it gathers and sums the scores of hospitals and their services from the 2021 to 2025 editions, providing a view of each centre's evolution over five years.
According to the organisation, Villalba General stands out for "the combination of a high ICAP score, the excellence of its services, and a sustained trajectory of care quality." This result is bolstered by the BiC for Best Medium Complexity Hospital achieved in the last five years and the seven awards accumulated by its Hematology and Hemotherapy, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Urology, Pediatrics, and Internal Medicine services during this period.
It aims to highlight the ongoing effort, providing an objective reference that helps to recognise and give visibility to organisations that, year after year, promote best practices, encourage continuous improvement, and place care quality at the centre of their strategy," say the ranking's organisers.
The list will be updated every January with the results of the most recent call and will maintain the analysis of the preceding five years.
