Families of Venezuelans missing after the Urda train crash can report to the Civil Guard of the Madrid Zone, according to the Venezuelan Embassy in Spain.

According to eldiario.com, the Venezuelan Embassy in Spain has activated a support mechanism for the families of Venezuelan citizens who may be missing following the railway accident on October 28 in the province of Toledo. Reports must be formalised at the headquarters of the Madrid Zone Civil Guard, located at 32 Batalla del Salado Street.

The collision occurred around 8:53 between Mora, Orgaz and Urda, at kilometre 118 of the line connecting Madrid with Seville. An AVE train from Renfe collided from behind with a Iryo train that was stopped on the track, causing several carriages to derail.

More than 500 passengers were on board the two trains. The official toll as of October 30 counted 69 fatalities and dozens of injuries.

The Embassy indicated that it is in contact with Spanish authorities and with families of individuals whose disappearance has been reported on social media. It is also following the case to facilitate actions related to Venezuelan citizens.

The Civil Guard had received 72 reports of disappearances related to the accident. Five people have been located, so as of October 30, 67 reports remained active. Of these, 14 corresponded to foreigners from 10 nationalities, including Venezuelans, although authorities did not specify how many were Venezuelans or disclose their identities.

Authorities have also set up that same location to collect DNA samples from direct relatives, in order to facilitate the identification of victims.

The judicial investigation is under secrecy of proceedings. Investigators are reviewing train logs and communications between the drivers and the Adif control centre, which authorised the Renfe AVE to resume movement while the Iryo train remained stopped. Responsibilities have yet to be established.
