Teachers and families occupy IES Nueva Numancia in Vallecas to demand that the Community of Madrid negotiates with the educational strike committee.

A sit-in of teachers and families took place on Thursday 5 November at IES Nueva Numancia in Vallecas, demanding that the Community of Madrid sit down to negotiate with the educational strike committee. According to El Salto, the protest capped a day marked by mobilisations.

In the morning, the mixed strike committee of teachers had already occupied the General Directorate of Human Resources of the Community. The teachers have been on indefinite strike for four weeks.

During the 12 pm concentration in front of the Department of Education, riot police acted against the teachers and arrested one of the protesters. This is the fourth time in these four weeks that force has been used to stop the protests.

The councillor Mercedes Zarzalejo reiterated in the Assembly of Madrid her refusal to meet with the strike committee. She also stated that the teachers "commit crimes with mafia-like practices".

Zarzalejo, do your job and sit down to negotiate with the strike committee," expressed the teachers from the sit-in.

From the gymnasium of the institute, families explained their position in a video.

As families, we are here because it is our duty to ensure that our children's rights are upheld.

Among the demands are the reduction of teaching hours and class sizes, a salary increase with a regional supplement, and the climate control of classrooms. Dozens of people intend to spend the night at the centre to maintain pressure.
