The Tenants' Union is calling for dozens of demonstrations across Spain this Saturday, with a major march in Madrid as the central event, to demand a 50% reduction in rents and indefinite contracts, following the Congress's rejection of the housing decrees.

The Tenants' Union has organised dozens of demonstrations in the main cities of Spain for this Saturday, with a major march in Madrid as the central act. The protest responds to the Congress's rejection of the two decrees that the Government aimed to use to halt evictions and extend rental contracts, as reported by Infobae.

The organisers are demanding a 50% reduction in rents, the requirement for indefinite contracts, and the expropriation of homes from vulture funds. Additionally, the union is calling for a general strike.

The mobilization in the capital adds to those planned in other Spanish cities, as part of a coordinated day of protest by the group.

The fall of the housing decrees leaves tenants unprotected,” states the Tenants' Union in its call.

The political context is marked by the decision of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to open a period of reflection to decide whether to bring forward the general elections, after Congress rejected on Friday, with votes from PP, Vox, and Junts, the two decrees with which the Government wanted to halt evictions and extend rental contracts, among other measures.

The march in Madrid will start at 12:00 hours from Puerta del Sol and will traverse the city centre. The organisers expect massive participation and have asked attendees to bring banners with their demands.
