An AVE covering the Madrid-Figueres route broke down this Monday near Ricla (Zaragoza), forcing the suspension of traffic in both directions on the high-speed line between Madrid and Barcelona. The 380 passengers were evacuated, and a woman required medical assistance due to dizziness.
The high-speed service between Madrid and Barcelona remains interrupted in both directions after an AVE train heading to Figueres broke down this Monday near Ricla, in the province of Zaragoza. The train has stopped at kilometre point 255.00, and the 380 passengers on board had to be evacuated, according to reports from the Government of Aragon and Renfe, as noted by elnacional.cat.
During the incident, a woman required medical assistance after experiencing dizziness. In addition to the suspension of rail traffic, the electrical supply to the overhead line in the affected section has also been interrupted, according to the same sources.
Traffic between Calatayud and Zaragoza has been interrupted due to a technical incident with a preceding train. The high-speed line connecting Madrid with Barcelona is affected. Changes and cancellations are being allowed at no cost for affected services.
The train had departed from Madrid at 14:27 hours, and the breakdown is believed to have originated from a fire in the cabin located at the rear of the train. The incident could keep the service suspended for several hours, as the fire must first be completely extinguished and it needs to be checked whether the flames have caused damage to the overhead line. Videos circulating on social media show a column of smoke coming from the train.
At the moment, there is no specific forecast for when the service will be restored. At the Atocha station in Madrid, several trains heading to Barcelona remain halted, waiting for the incident to be resolved. Passengers on board do not know how long they will have to remain immobilised, and in light of the uncertainty, the doors of the trains have been opened so that those who prefer can wait on the platforms.
