The early call for general elections on 29 November is now in the BOE. Parties must prepare candidacies and programmes in record time.
The publication in the Official State Gazette (BOE) of the decree for the early call of general elections on 29 November sets the electoral machinery in motion. Political parties have a few weeks ahead to prepare candidacies and programmes with which they will compete at the polls, according to Infobae.
The electoral date comes after the Government has dissolved the Cortes, leaving numerous legislative reforms in limbo. Among them are some of the labour improvements that Spanish teachers were expecting, who take almost 40 years to reach the top of their pay scale and most remain with a salary around 45,000 euros gross after ten years of working in increasingly challenging classrooms.
The Permanent Deputation of Congress will assume legislative powers while the Cortes are dissolved. This body will need to process the housing decrees that the Government will reapprove in the Council of Ministers this Tuesday, after the two original texts were rejected last week in Congress. The Executive is introducing some modifications so that they can be validated through this route.
The electoral calendar also affects other pending decisions. The Constitutional Court is debating this Tuesday about the amnesty for the crime of embezzlement of the leaders of the 'procés', a guarantee that would open the door for the return of former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, which could happen even before the elections if the Supreme Court lifts the arrest warrant against him.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court must decide as soon as possible on the voting rights of Spaniards who obtained nationality through the grandchildren's law, whose registration in the electoral roll is currently suspended pending the early elections.
The electoral campaign will begin on the dates set by the electoral regulations and the elections will be held on 29 November. Citizens will be able to consult the electoral roll and submit claims within the deadlines established by the Electoral Census Office.
