The mayor of Torrejón de Ardoz, Alejandro Navarro, handed the staff of office to the Virgin of the Rosary on Sunday, October 5, at the San Juan Evangelista church. The council approved the appointment on October 2.
The mayor of Torrejón de Ardoz, Alejandro Navarro, handed the staff of office of the mayoralty to the Virgin of the Rosary last Sunday, October 5, in a ceremony held at the San Juan Evangelista church. The event concluded the Patronal Festivities of the locality, as reported by Noticias para Municipios.
The council had approved the appointment of the patroness as Honorary Mayor of the city on October 2, at the proposal of the mayor himself. The handing over of the staff of office marked the conclusion of that institutional recognition.
Today is a historic day. The greatest symbol of the memory, tradition, and identity of the city is its Patroness,” emphasised Mayor Alejandro Navarro.
Navarro explained that the patronage of the Virgin of the Rosary “was the result of a historical process spanning several centuries, driven by popular devotion and consolidated by the religious and cultural life of the town.” The mayor also expressed his recognition to the Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary “for their work over the centuries that has allowed this tradition to remain alive.”
For her part, Cristina Vidales, president of the Brotherhood, highlighted the mayor's “commendable initiative” in recognising the Virgin as Honorary Mayor: “It fills us with satisfaction and pride, as it is the symbol of the love of an entire town that bows before its Patroness,” she stated.
After the ceremony at the church, a commemorative plaque of thanks to the mayor was unveiled, presented by the Brotherhood at their headquarters. Historical records place the patronage of the Virgin of the Rosary in Torrejón de Ardoz as early as 1721, the year the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary was established, according to the General Diocesan Archive of Toledo.
