The City Council of Madrid is offering a 35-year concession for the open-air auditorium in Juan Carlos I park, inactive for nearly two decades. Bids can be submitted until November 24.
According to elDiario.es, the City Council of Madrid has opened a competition to grant the operation of the open-air auditorium in Juan Carlos I park for 35 years, extendable for another five. The venue, with the largest outdoor capacity in the capital, has not hosted events for almost two decades. Its stands were built in the early nineties and have seen artists such as Björk, Alicia Keys, and Guns N' Roses.
Bids can be submitted until November 24. The council aims to modernise the space to enhance the cultural, sports, and leisure offerings of the city, presenting it as a future cultural landmark of Madrid.
A first-class space that contributes to strengthening the cultural, sports, and leisure offerings of the city
At least 60% of the programming must be cultural, sports, or leisure-related, aimed at the general public. The remaining 40% can be allocated to private events such as meetings, conferences, congresses, or fairs. The successful bidder will also need to open a public-access dining space.
The concessionaire will pay a minimum fee of 446,000 euros per year, which will increase by 2% for each year of operation. They will also be responsible for renovation works, which the City Council estimates will cost at least 15.7 million euros. According to reports, the facilities being granted have an estimated value of 35.9 million euros.
The terms require an acoustic report to set noise limits in accordance with municipal regulations, which is important for local residents. However, they allow exceeding those levels for up to 30 days a year and opening the park outside its usual hours. The reference venue has a capacity of 9,813 people, and the successful bidder may expand the facilities with buildings compatible with the activity, such as using the cybernetic fountain as a stage.
