Madrid City Council has raised 1.4 million euros in two years from items that went unclaimed. The latest auction features over 5,600 items seeking new owners.
According to epe.es, Madrid City Council has raised 1.4 million euros in the last two years from the sale of 4,700 items that went unclaimed at the Lost Property Office. Among them are Gucci and Celine bags, Bulgari jewellery, luxury watches, and drones.
The latest auction, announced a week ago, has not yet been included in that figure. It features over 5,600 items including jewellery, watches, mobile phones, cameras, electronics, musical instruments, antiques, and decorative works.
The municipal regulations state that an item becomes the property of the City Council two years after its deposit, if neither its owner nor the finder has claimed it. Those in good condition and not needed for municipal services are put up for public auction. The money is deposited in the Municipal Treasury and goes into the city’s budget.
The catalogue includes a Louis Vuitton suitcase valued at 1,200 euros, an original Star Wars poster from 1977 for the same amount, and a set of Bulgari rings with a starting price of 1,100 euros. There is also a Piaget Altiplano watch in rose gold valued at over 5,100 euros.
Technology makes up a large part of the lots. There are special models and editions of Nintendo Switch, a PSP Street console with thirteen video games, drones, tablets, and mobile phones from various brands, many unused and in their original boxes. The offer is completed with analogue and digital cameras, vinyl records, Montblanc fountain pens, philatelic material, and antique golf clubs.
Among the most unique pieces is a fragment of a window from the RMS Olympic, the sister ship of the Titanic, complete with a certificate and a handwritten letter. During 2025, the service received over 78,000 items.
