Más Madrid Compromiso con Getafe is organising a talk on Wednesday 21 October about the repression in Annobón and Spain's role in the island's incorporation into Equatorial Guinea.

The talk titled "The Republic of Annobón" will take place on Wednesday 21 October at 19:00, at the premises of Más Madrid Compromiso con Getafe, located at Calle Leganés 2, in Getafe Centro. According to ambolegadu.com, the meeting will address the situation of the island and Spain's role in its recent history.

Speakers will include Juan Badya and Orlando Cartagena Lagar, the exiled Prime Minister of the Republic of Annobón. They will discuss the situation on the island, the defence of its territory, and the struggle for recognition of its rights and self-determination.

One of the key topics will be Spain's decision during the decolonisation process of 1968, when Annobón became part of Equatorial Guinea. The event questions that decision and proposes to debate its consequences for the Annobonese population.

The announcement denounces ethnic discrimination, political persecution, and serious human rights violations under the Guinean regime. Among the background information, it cites the arrests of July 2024, which occurred after protests against explosions and extractive activities threatening the territory. The announcement recalls that the United Nations Organization determined that 37 of those arrests were arbitrary and discriminatory.

The organisers state that complaints continued after those events, with new allegations of abuses and arrests. They want the talk to shed light on this reality from the perspectives of its protagonists and to reflect on the international community's response, with particular attention to Spain.

In the face of silence and indifference, international solidarity and defence of human rights

The talk is free of charge according to the announcement of the event, which will take place on Wednesday 21 October at 19:00 at Calle Leganés 2.
