The Fuenlabrada City Council is asking the Community of Madrid to speed up the resolution of the contract for CEIP Yvonne Blake. The works have been halted since February and there is no date for their resumption.
The Fuenlabrada City Council is once again requesting that the Community of Madrid expedite the procedures to resume the expansion works of CEIP Yvonne Blake. The work has been halted since February 2026, after the awarded company abandoned the project.
According to Noticias para Municipios, the lack of a timeline is concerning the municipal government, which warns that the delay could prevent the school from being ready for the 2027-2028 school year.
The Councillor for Education, Ana María Pérez (PSOE), acknowledges that the centre is at a standstill and adds her main concern:
Right now the school is at a standstill, but what really worries me is that it may not be ready for the year 2027-2028.
Pérez has sent a new letter to the Department of Education, Science and Universities to find out the status of the resolution of the previous contract and the timelines for putting the work out to a new tender. She explains that the response from the deputy councillor has been the same as in previous communications, and she will write to the Department again during the month of October.
They are still in the administrative processing to cancel the other contract, but we don’t know anything more.
Sources from the Department of Education indicate that the Community is working to resolve the contract as soon as possible in order to put the work out to tender again:
Working to resolve the contract with the utmost speed possible to be able to re-tender the work.
The halt occurred when the awarded company cited liquidity problems, which forced the regional government to initiate the procedures to resolve the contract and prepare a new tender. On June 1, the Community announced the start of that procedure, after months of delays and protests from families. Some even locked themselves inside the centre for a weekend.
Despite this, there has been no clarification on when the contract will be definitively resolved, when the work will be tendered again, or when it can be resumed. The expansion was scheduled to open at the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year.
The third and final phase of the expansion includes the construction of the library, gymnasium, and other facilities, as well as an outdoor sports court. Its completion would finalize the pending spaces of the centre.
Pérez explains that the lack of facilities has forced the use of part of the dining room and a psychomotricity classroom as classrooms:
The school is left with the gym, the library, all the area that would complete what a school in proper conditions should be, because the children currently do not have a gym.
The City Council insists that the resolution of the contract and the new tender must be processed as soon as possible so that the delay does not also affect the next school year. The councillor has emphasized:
Public contracting is very protective, but the contract must be resolved as soon as possible with that company and a new contract tendered.
Meanwhile, the Community of Madrid assures that it is working to unblock the procedure and that it will adapt the facilities if there are needs for schooling. However, the families of Fuenlabrada still do not have a specific date to resume the works.
