The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando hosts the exhibition 'Madrid in the Golden Age' from Tuesday, featuring 70 pieces from over twenty institutions. Entry is free until capacity is reached and will be open until December 2.
The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, located at 13 Alcalá Street, will host the exhibition 'Madrid in the Golden Age. A Melting Pot of Destinies and the Landing of Geniuses' starting next Tuesday, bringing together 70 pieces from more than twenty institutions, as reported by Europa Press. The exhibition will be open until December 2 with free entry until capacity is reached.
The exhibition covers the 16th and 17th centuries and begins in 1561, when Philip II moved the Court to Madrid. This move transformed the town into the political centre of a Monarchy that extended across Europe, America, and Asia, attracting writers, artists, scientists, financiers, and professionals from administration, commerce, diplomacy, and the military.
Among the exhibited pieces are paintings, historical documents, coins, textiles, furniture, and decorative art objects. The collections come from the National Museum of Prado, the National Archaeological Museum, the Royal Academy of History, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando itself, the Casa de Alba Foundation, and National Heritage, among other institutions.
The exhibition dedicates space to figures such as the engineers Juanelo Turriano and Cosme Lotti, the physician Andrea Vesalius, the painter Diego Velázquez, and the writers Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca, and Francisco de Quevedo. It also explores the theatrical life of the comedy courtyards, gastronomy, celebrations, beliefs, and the cultural blending generated by the Crown's commercial connections.
Visiting hours are from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 am to 7 pm, and Sundays and holidays from 10 am to 3 pm. The programme includes guided tours for adults on Thursdays at 5:30 pm; Fridays at 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm; and Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, and 12:30 pm.
The curators Carmen Sanz Ayán, Alejandra Franganillo, and Cristina Hernández will offer dialogue-based tours at 4:30 pm. Sanz Ayán will participate on October 31 and November 7; Franganillo on October 17 and 24; and Hernández on November 14 and 21. Additionally, there will be sign language tours on October 11 at 11:30 am, and on October 22 at 5:30 pm.
The exhibition is organised by the General Subdirectorate of Historical Heritage, the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, and the Office of Spanish, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
