The José María Rodero Municipal Theatre hosted the Sports Gala by Radio Marca this Thursday, recognising the best local athletes and awarding the Gold Medal to the Community of Madrid.
The José María Rodero Municipal Theatre in Torrejón de Ardoz hosted the Sports Gala by Radio Marca this Thursday, an event that in 2026 coincides with the city's designation as European City of Sport. The event brought together local athletes, world champions, and institutional representatives to honour sporting achievements and the work of clubs in promoting grassroots sports, as reported by diariodetorrejon.es.
The day began at 10:00 AM with a special programme from Radio Marca, which set up a stop on its “Heritage of Sport” tour in the town. The broadcast featured the mayor, Alejandro Navarro; the councillor for Sports and Tourism and world boxing champion, Miriam Gutiérrez; and other athletes from Torrejón. In the afternoon, Telemadrid journalist Javier Callejo presented the gala, which was attended by Olympic champions María Pérez and Lydia Valentín, the General Director of Sports for the Community of Madrid, Alberto Tomé, the president of UCAM, María Dolores García Mascarell, and world champions from Torrejón Iván Aurrecoechea and Javier Limones. The president of FIBA Europe, Jorge Garbajosa, sent his apologies and a video of thanks. The gala included performances from the Deseos Danza Dance School and the Torrejón Capoeira Association.
In the awards section, Iván Aurrecoechea was recognised as the Best Male Athlete, while Claudia Bollero and Alicia Voto shared the award for Best Female Athlete. David Fernández and Sofía Pinillos received the award for promising athletes from Torrejón, and Oliver Román and Cristina Nuero were honoured in the area of functional diversity.
In team categories, the Rivillos Academy Limones Juvenil won the award for Best Male Team in Lower Categories, and the Torrejón Sala Alevín Femenino was recognised as the Best Female Team in Lower Categories. In senior categories, Inter FS Jp Financial was awarded Best Male Team and Club Voleibol Torrejón (UCAM Torrejón) was named Best Female Team. The Club Ajedrez Torrejón received the award for Best Sports Entity, and José Antonio Paraiso was honoured for Best Sports Career.
The gala awarded the Gold Medal for Promoting Sport in Torrejón de Ardoz to the Community of Madrid, which was collected by Alberto Tomé. Institutional awards were also given to the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), the Higher Sports Council (CSD), the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), the Royal Football Federation of Madrid (RFFM), and the San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM).
In the category of sports values, the winners were María Pérez (athletics) and Lydia Valentín (weightlifting). Radio MARCA received the Sports Communication Award for its 25 years of promoting sports, and the Heritage of Sport Awards went to Jorge Garbajosa, Miriam Gutiérrez, Javi Limones, and Iván Aurrecoechea.
Special mentions for sporting merit recognised Mario Rivillos, European champion with the Spanish futsal team; Ana Verónica González, world champion in Adult +48 Ice Skating; Ainhoa Pastor, under-21 Taekwondo champion; Carlota Duartez Berl, children’s Padel champion; and Vera Becerra, who obtained two diplomas at the Base Spanish Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship in the children’s category.
The mayor, Alejandro Navarro, highlighted during his speech the importance of sports in the city.
One of the hallmarks of our city is undoubtedly sport and its athletes. All of you demonstrate with your effort and enthusiasm that the title of City of Sport is well deserved,” Navarro stated.
The mayor also wanted to acknowledge the work behind the successes.
In everyone's mind are our great elite athletes that Torrejón has given to Spanish sport, who have reached the highest levels. And you all know very well that behind those successes, there is always intense, hard, and quiet work, both from the athletes themselves and their coaches, and of course, families, whose support is also essential,” he added.
The Sports Gala by Radio Marca is consolidating as an annual event for local sports, which in this edition had a special character as it took place in the year that Torrejón de Ardoz holds the title of European City of Sport. The event served to recognise the work of clubs, coaches, and families that keep the city as a sports benchmark in the Community of Madrid.
