The indefinite public education strike in Madrid began with police charges in Ciudad Universitaria. The government delegate calls for an urgent investigation.

The indefinite public education strike in Madrid started this Wednesday with police charges, confrontations, and five people arrested in Ciudad Universitaria, Madrid. This is reported by Diari de Tarragona, echoing information from the EFE agency.

The intervention has prompted condemnation from the Complutense University of Madrid and led the government delegate, Francisco Martín, to request an urgent investigation from the National Police to clarify what happened and determine if the response was proportionate.

According to data from the Government Delegation, the police action was specific and resulted in five arrests, two police officers with minor injuries, and several injured protesters.

Martín defended the professionalism of the officers, although he emphasized the need for measures to be taken if an action is not proportionate. In his statements to RNE, he stated:

This morning we saw very harsh images that hurt us all. Just as no aggression against the police should be tolerated, their response must always be proportionate.

According to the delegate's account, the police arrived in the area after receiving several calls alerting them to street blockages and the presence of hooded individuals at the gathering. The officers formed a cordon that some protesters attempted to breach, and Martín claims there were assaults on the police prior to the intervention.

The protest, called to demand better working conditions and denounce the deterioration of public education, has also opened a new political front between the government of Isabel Díaz Ayuso and the central executive, which has expressed support for the teachers' demands.
