Daniel Jiménez, coordinator of IU in Puente de Vallecas, has presented his candidacy for the primaries to lead the party's list for the City Council of Madrid in 2027.

Daniel Jiménez Vaquerizo, journalist and coordinator of Izquierda Unida in Puente de Vallecas, has announced his candidacy for the party's primaries to head its list for the City Council of Madrid in 2027, as reported by Gacetín Madrid.

The candidacy, diverse and made up of members from different generations and assemblies in the capital, aims to restore IU's presence in the city council and in the municipal district boards, from which it has been absent since 2019. It also proposes to strengthen the assemblies and regain political initiative in the neighbourhoods.

Madrid has a long history of struggle, popular organisation, and collective achievements, of which Izquierda Unida has been a fundamental part.

Jiménez criticises the city model of the Government of José Luis Martínez-Almeida, accusing it of real estate speculation, deterioration of public services, and neglect of the neighbourhoods.

We cannot resign ourselves to a city where housing is a privilege and inequalities continue to grow.

The list is headed by Jiménez, accompanied by Alba Agraz, a political scientist and economist, and Jon Bakaikoa, an architect and federal head of IU's Urban Model Area. The candidacy is rounded off by Gloria Cavanna, an activist from the Madrid neighbourhood movement, and Mauricio Valiente, general director of the Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) and former councillor of Madrid during the Ahora Madrid government.

Among the other members are Elena Quintana, from Puente de Vallecas, and Jorge Martínez, from Moratalaz. The candidates represent districts such as Vicálvaro, Retiro, Carabanchel, Tetuán, Ciudad Lineal, or Hortaleza.

These primaries are not just about choosing a group of people. They are about deciding what Izquierda Unida we need for Madrid.

Jiménez has worked as a journalist at Madridiario and as press officer at the Bolivian Embassy in Spain. He has been a member of IU since he was young and occupies the 13th position on the candidacy of the Frente Amplio for Congress in Madrid.

The candidacy must now gather the necessary endorsements before October 29. The online voting will take place from November 4 to 6, with the in-person voting on November 8.
