The Mayor of Madrid urges the Government Delegation to remove the encampment at Puerta del Sol, which he considers illegal.
According to elconstitucional.es, the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, requested this Friday that the Government Delegation remove the encampment set up at Puerta del Sol. He made this request after the diploma ceremony for the sixth promotion of Mobility Agents of Madrid, held by the City Council at the Conde Duque Contemporary Culture Centre.
The mayor defended that the gathering poses a risk and should be lifted as soon as possible to prevent a serious incident. According to Almeida, it is an illegal encampment that is not peaceful, despite what the left claims.
We have already seen some episodes of violence
Almeida linked the continuation of the protest to the possibility of new incidents. The housing protest began on September 26, after the eviction of Maricarmen, an 87-year-old woman who died days later in the hospital. Regarding this, the mayor stated:
it has nothing to do anymore with the purpose that brought them to Puerta del Sol
The mayor also responded to statements made by the Government Delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín, urging him not to blame other administrations in the face of a tragedy:
That when there is a tragedy, the Government Delegate should not blame Ayuso and Almeida
The City Council's request is now directed to the Government Delegation, which is the administration that would need to address the removal of the encampment.
