The Puerta del Sol Metro station closes from 12:00 this Friday for ventilation shaft cleaning. The Community attributes the measure to waste accumulation from the camping.
The Puerta del Sol station of Madrid Metro closes from 12:00 this Friday to carry out cleaning work. According to Cadena SER, the regional government justifies the measure due to the accumulation of waste at the entrances of the housing camp.
The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced it during an interview on EsRadio. In it, she stated that the situation at kilometer zero is chaotic and accused the Spanish government of allowing the camp to grow:
it will leave the city overwhelmed, congested, uncomfortable
While the station is closed, trains on lines 1, 2, and 3 will not stop at Sol, and transfers between them will also not be possible. Metro de Madrid has not specified how long the closure will last.
For its part, Cercanías Madrid has indicated that it has not detected health issues at its Sol station. The main access, known as “the whale,” remains open, and Cercanías trains will stop as normal.
The deputy mayor of Madrid, Inma Sanz, criticized the government delegate, Francisco Martín, from Plaza Mayor, accusing him of playing with the safety of Madrid residents:
playing with the safety and physical integrity of Madrid residents
Sanz added that Madrid Salud has confirmed the presence of urine and feces in several areas of the square, which have reached the Metro exits.
One day earlier, the Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructure, Jorge Rodrigo, had sent a letter to the government delegate requesting the immediate eviction of the camp, in which he cited:
the accumulation of urine, feces, and other organic waste in the ventilation shafts and access points of the Metro
For travellers using Sol, the immediate alternative is the Cercanías access, while the Metro station will remain closed until the work is completed, the timeline for which is not yet set.
