The rooftop of the Calderón Theatre in Madrid, closed since the Civil War and forgotten for over 80 years, has reopened under the name Rooftop Lírico. The reopening took place in 2025, according to El Español.
The project has been driven by Darío Regattieri, founder and CEO of Beon Worldwide, through his initiative Raíz Urbana. This initiative is dedicated to recovering iconic disused spaces to rehabilitate them and restore their original function.
The rehabilitation involved a private investment of €5 million and has returned the terrace to its original state, based on historical plans and photographs. The space, with a capacity for 850 people, now hosts events, exhibitions, and performances.
The people who go are absolutely amazed. And what everyone, absolutely everyone, says is: ‘Has that always been here?’,” explains Regattieri.
The rooftop was one of the first open-air theatres in a European capital 117 years ago. After five years of paperwork and construction, Rooftop Lírico joins other recoveries of unique spaces in Spain.
